Are you listening to the right voice?

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 NLT

“Alena, let mommy hold that bracelet for you so that you don’t lose it,” I said. “No mommy. I won’t lose it”, was the reply. This phrase was repeated several times throughout our two-hour visit at the local mall. My six-year-old daughter decided that she was going to wear her bracelet without our knowledge after we had already told her that it was too big for her. The result was Alena desperately asking us to go back to the store where she believed that she left it and her going home disappointed.

As a parent, I try to give my children opportunities that will allow them to make their decisions and to learn from them. Alena likes to be in control and does not like others telling her what to do. This situation was a learning experience for her because she often challenges me when I give her instructions that I know will benefit her. Instead of her submitting to my guidance, she wanted to make her decisions to test the outcome. Although I wanted to take the bracelet away from her so that she wouldn’t risk losing it, I decided to take the chance that she would take heed to my advice the next time that I gave her direction.

blog photo 2Just as parents know their children’s tendencies, God also knows the way that He designed us. Have you been in a situation when you ignored the voice of God gently guiding you? Or are you are going through something right now in which God is asking you to trust Him in a particular area of your life? Is it in the area of finances, career, family, relationship? Have you learned to listen and to obey the instructions of God? Or do you find yourself regularly taking your chances and doing it your way?

We have to learn to slow down and listen to what the Spirit of the Lord is saying to us. These questions should challenge us to pause, self-reflect and remember to allow God to take control. Our Father always knows and does what’s best for us. Even when we think the best plan is to figure out everything on our own, God knows our destiny. He desires us to relinquish our will and to give him the reins to guide us in every area of life.

You may have been in a situation when you ignored God’s guidance and feel like you cannot overcome it. Those feelings of failure do not come from God; they come from the devil who wants to rob you of your joy and your peace of mind. God puts us in situations so that we learn to trust Him and to be molded into His image. Do not listen to the enemy’s voice, but adhere to the voice of a loving Father who will give you other opportunities to follow His commands to a victorious destiny.

Prayer Starter: Lord, I am sorry when I ignore your guidance and try to do things on my own. Help me to submit to Your commands so that I go on the path that You have directed me to follow. Your plans for me are good, and I release control to trust that You know what is best for me.
